DeLorean DMC-12 from "Back To The Future", on Avant Slot 180 chassis

I picked this resin body kit from one of the slotcar forums a few years ago, but never got around to making it into a slot car, until I recently found a source of really cheap rolling chassis. A topic on the Auslot forum pointed out the sudden availability of these Avant Slot 180 Angle-winder Chassis kits, which were fully assembled and running, with good motor and alloy rear wheels, for less than AUS$15 each. BARGAIN!!! I couldn't resist, and neither could many others, and bought 5 to start with and then another dozen or so (wanted even more but they sold out pretty quick). They are very low, wide and fast chassis, but not adjustable, so I went hunting through my "to do" box for spare bodies to see if I could find some to fit as is, just to get a couple under my belt and really see how they perform. This was a pretty much perfect fit (along with an Eldon Mustang), in both width and wheelbase, although I need to fit a solid front axle and make the front track a bit wider. The rear axle was quite wide and with grub screw alloy wheels it was easy to move them out further, but with stub axles on the front there is not much leeway, but the chassis design allows for them to be easily replaced with a solid axle. The chassis is quite rear end heavy though (heavy motor and allow wheels?), and the body top as you can see is quite rear end heavy as well, so had to put about 25 gm of lead over the front axle to get it to stay in the slot. Being so wide, and quite heavy now, it does handle quite well, although hard to slide it through the corners.

I haven't quite finished it off yet. I am working on moulding up a few different dual rear exhausts, one of which should be suitable for this car (and a few others). I also am working on some decals for the front and rear DMC/DeLorean badges and "OutATime" number plate. I am not overly wrapt with the paint job, and I know its Silver when it should be stainless steel, but it's close enough for me. Detailing was tricky, particularly with my shaky old hands, as there was only a couple of bits I could mask off. Driver is a bit old, but didn't have a younger non-racing driver head. Interior is from one of Phil's Tassie resins.
